Split, a city in Croatia, is one of the most magical cities in Europe. It is full of rich history, charming streets, and beautiful buildings full of character. The city of Split is so beautiful that it is very easy to get lost in it.

With only three days to explore Split, it’s important to have a strong itinerary to ensure you see everything the city offers. From historic buildings to beautiful Split beaches, with a beautiful old town, Split has everything you could wish for. There’s nothing worse than leaving town and realizing you haven’t seen everything you wanted to!

Day 1: Enjoy the old city center of Split and Diocletian’s Palace

Starting your trip in Split makes sense if you start with the best part of Split. You can start the first day by exploring the old center of Split around Diocletian’s Palace, before deciding to wander to the nearby city attractions.

If you don’t know where to find cheap parking near the old town, Split City Parking offers you the best price for parking in the garage.

Diocletian's Palace

Diocletian’s Palace is one of the most interesting attractions in Split that should be taken into consideration because Split’s Old Town began its life as an ancient Roman palace. This huge fortified palace occupied most of the modern city center and was built for Emperor Diocletian.

Then you can visit the rest of the attractions in the city, but don’t forget about some of the more general places to visit when you don’t know what to do in Split, such as the Old Town Hall and the Pjac, also known as the People’s Square. These places will give you an impression of the beautiful Venetian architecture of the city.

Day 2: Spend time in nature around Split

Although it is possible to spend more time sightseeing in Split or enjoying Split’s beaches, don’t miss the opportunity to see more of the region with another day trip. You might be surprised how many day trips from Split are possible.

One of the favorite day trips from Split, both for tourists and locals, are National Park Plitvice lakes and National Park Krka. In addition to these national parks, trips to nearby islands are also popular.

The Plitvice Lakes is one of the most popular waterfalls in Croatia under the protection of UNESCO, they are excellent for day trips, and they are not far from Split.

From the beautiful view of each waterfall to the different colors of the lake water and the amazing surrounding nature, the Plitvice Lakes are truly breathtaking. While there, you can wander the boardwalks above the lake or hike along the tree line and enjoy a boat ride on the park’s largest lake.

Apart from the Plitvice Lakes, Croatia is also known for its enchanting Krka waterfalls. One of the most visited national parks in Croatia is certainly the Krka National Park, which is located in the northwest near the town of Šibenik.

National park Krka

NP Krka is home to seven waterfalls that flow over small cliffs lined with lush vegetation, which makes Krka waterfalls a beautiful sight to behold. Visitors to the national park can not only see waterfalls but can also swim in freshwater pools.

If you are not able to go to the Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park, you can visit Marjan hill for recreation near Split. When you climb the Marjan hill, you will have a wonderful view of Split and the islands, with even several unique viewpoints.

As we mentioned, many tourists also like to visit the nearby islands. There are many day and half-day excursion packages, and people usually take a day package that lasts about 10 hours.

One of the more famous excursion routes is Bol, Hvar and the Pakleni Islands or Biševo, Blue Cave, Vis (Komiža, Stiniva), Budikovac (Blue Lagoon), Pakleni Islands and Hvar. If you decide to travel to Split in summer, it is definitely recommended to swim on one of the mentioned islands if you have some spare time.

Hvar has a rich history, superb cuisine, diverse nightlife, and breathtaking nature, so if you have time, definitely visit this island.

In addition to the daily route, there is also a well-known half-day route where you can see Split, Trogir, and Krknjaši – Blue Lagoon or Krknjaši – Blue Lagoon, Čiovo, and Šolta. This is a great way to visit beautiful parts of Croatia and have fun at the same time.

Day 3: Experience Split like a local

Have you realized that it’s your last day in Split and you don’t know what to do in Split in one day? The best way to experience Split is to join one of the many walking tours of Diocletian’s Palace and the Old Town. These two areas of Split date from the 4th century and were the home of the Roman emperor. Both are extremely well-preserved and stunning.

After a very in-depth exploration of Split’s history, it’s time to step out of the old stone buildings and onto Split’s stunning promenade. It is located right next to the sea and is surrounded by palm trees on one side and delicious restaurants on the other. Paved streets and old buildings make for a very pleasant walk.

This is a great time to grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the way! Many have outdoor terraces and serve fresh local seafood. A late lunch here with a view of the sea on one side and the ancient stone walls on the other will take you to memories you won’t soon forget.

A great way to learn more about the culture and traditions of a city is to go to the local markets and see what they serve and offer. There are tons of great markets in Split that are full of local flavors, souvenirs, clothes, and flowers. The two markets that all the locals go to are definitely the Green Market and the Fish Market.

If you spend some time watching how Croatian residents interact with each other, you will learn something about the local environment. It’s also a great idea to pick up some of the local ingredients to make a really special dinner. Incorporating local flavors into your meal is a nice way to experience Split and save some money.
